				<title>Dear Coral Reef Research Hub Team,
I am writing as the Founder and Chairman of SAWI Water Innovation to explore a practical collaboration between our organisations focused on coral resilience, early-career research and independently evaluated aquatic-restoration technologies.
My path into water innovation is deeply personal.
I am a liver-transplant recipient. That experience changed the way I understand filtration, resilience and recovery—and ultimately shaped why I founded SAWI Water Innovation.
The liver sustains life by filtering and processing what enters the body, but its capacity is not limitless. When it becomes overwhelmed, observation and diagnosis alone are not enough. Recovery requires timely, evidence-based and carefully monitored intervention.
I have come to see the ocean in much the same way.
The ocean is the liver of the Earth.
It absorbs the cumulative consequences of everything occurring upstream: nutrients, sediment, hydrocarbons, plastics, industrial pollutants, declining oxygen levels and increasing environmental stress.
Coral reefs are often among the first ecosystems to show that the wider system is becoming overwhelmed.
The Coral Reef Research Hub’s work connecting scientists, early-career researchers, conservation professionals and reef managers presents an important opportunity to bring independent scientific capability together with emerging field technologies.
SAWI Water Innovation is developing an integrated approach that combines:
environmental detection and time-integrated diagnostic monitoring;
interception of sediment, hydrocarbons, microplastics and pollutant-associated particulates before they reach sensitive marine environments;
targeted dissolved-oxygen restoration using Alarivean SeaBreather technology;
geospatial reef intelligence, including the potential use of Allen Coral Atlas data;
independent ecological measurement and transparent reporting; and
local delivery involving researchers, regulators, Traditional Owners and coastal communities.
We do not claim that any single technology can solve the climate-driven threats confronting coral reefs.
Nor are we seeking endorsement of unverified performance claims.
Instead, we would like to work with The Coral Reef Research Hub to create a credible pathway through which emerging technologies can be independently questioned, tested and evaluated by the coral-science community.
Proposed collaboration
We propose exploring a Coral Resilience Applied Research Partnership built around four practical elements.
1. Independent research network
The Hub could help identify coral scientists, environmental chemists, marine ecologists, oxygen-dynamics specialists and early-career researchers interested in contributing to independently governed field studies.
This could include researchers from regions where coral ecosystems are experiencing:
hypoxia or low dissolved oxygen;
sediment and contaminated runoff;
harmful algal blooms;
port, dredging or coastal-development pressures;
declining water quality; or
compounding thermal and local environmental stress.
2. Applied research challenge
Together, we could develop a clearly defined research question such as:
Can targeted pollutant interception and oxygen restoration improve local water conditions around stressed coral or associated reef ecosystems without creating unacceptable secondary impacts?
Any study would include:
baseline ecological and water-quality assessment;
control and treatment locations where appropriate;
predefined safety and stop-work thresholds;
monitoring of dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, salinity, turbidity and relevant contaminants;
independent data analysis; and
publication of both positive and negative findings.
3. Early-career scientist participation
The collaboration could provide early-career researchers with practical experience in:
experimental design;
reef and water-quality monitoring;
emerging environmental technologies;
regulatory and community engagement;
data interpretation;
science communication; and
preparation of peer-reviewed or publicly accessible findings.
Subject to funding, SAWI Water Innovation and its partners could also explore contributing to a dedicated research grant, internship or field placement delivered through the Hub.
4. Knowledge sharing
SAWI Water Innovation could participate in a Hub masterclass or technical forum addressing:
From Reef Monitoring to Responsible Intervention: How Should Emerging Restoration Technologies Be Evaluated?
The session would not be a sales presentation. It would invite scientists to challenge the assumptions, risks, evidence requirements and practical limitations of active aquatic intervention.
This is important to me personally.
My transplant did not succeed because someone made an ambitious claim. It succeeded because trained people followed evidence, understood risk, monitored the intervention and remained prepared to change course.
That same discipline must apply when working with complex natural systems.
A partnership between The Coral Reef Research Hub and SAWI Water Innovation could create:
meaningful research and career opportunities for Hub members;
access to potential field projects and emerging technologies;
independently generated evidence for reef managers and communities;
new material for publications, workshops and masterclasses;
a pathway for researchers in Australia, the Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas to collaborate; and
a responsible framework for determining where active intervention may—or may not—have a role.
The immediate next step could be a short introductory discussion to identify one carefully bounded research question and determine whether there is sufficient scientific interest to establish a working group.
Coral reefs do not need more unsupported promises.
They need talented people, transparent evidence and carefully governed action.
I believe The Coral Reef Research Hub and SAWI Water Innovation could make a valuable contribution by bringing those three elements together.
Yours sincerely,
Robert Manning

				<title>CORAL REEF NEWS: Japanese scientists race to save reefs from heat &#039;bomb&#039;

From &quot;heatwave simulators&quot; to ecological bootcamps, scientists and conservationists are trying ways to revive and reinforce the famous coral reefs off Japan&#039;s Okinawa, decimated by climate-driven bleaching two summers ago.

The subtropical southern Japanese region boasts some of the world&#039;s most biodiverse hubs of normally multicoloured coral, but a 2024 marine heatwave created &quot;graveyards&quot; of ghostly pale or sickly brown organisms.

With the world&#039;s oceans the hottest on record in June, and a major El Niño predicted this year, experts fear that 2026 could be even worse for the colonies of polyps and the rich variety of marine life that calls them home.

We are excited to announce that development of the Coral Reef Research Hub Mobile App (CoRR Hub) has now entered its final stage. Our development team is currently completing the remaining features, carrying out final refinements, and ensuring the app delivers a smooth and reliable experience ahead of its official launch. With the core functionality now in place, we are rapidly approaching one of the most exciting milestones in the project’s journey.

Our next step will be to open the app to a dedicated beta testing group made up of CoRR Hub members. Beta testers will receive early access to the app and play an important role in helping us identify bugs, test new features, and provide valuable feedback before the public release. If you are a Premium Member of The Coral Reef Research Hub and would like to be considered for our beta testing team, we would love to hear from you. Simply get in touch with us to register your interest and help shape the future of the world’s first dedicated mobile networking platform built specifically for the global coral reef science community.

				<title>Important Update: Changes to Mentorship Programme Access

Following our recent announcement regarding pricing structure updates, we also want to inform members of upcoming changes to access for our mentorship programme.

From the end of this weekend, our mentorship programme pages will no longer be accessible to monthly members. This decision has been made to help ensure the long-term sustainability and value of the programme, as we have seen increasing numbers of users joining for a single month to access mentorship support before immediately unsubscribing.

Moving forward, access to our mentorship network will be available exclusively to annual and institutional members. This will allow us to continue building a high-quality, committed mentorship environment that benefits both mentors and members alike.

If you are currently a monthly member, there is still time to retain uninterrupted access to our mentorship programme and secure the existing pricing structure by upgrading to an annual membership before the end of the weekend.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we continue developing and strengthening The Coral Reef Research Hub community.</title>

				<title>Hi coral researchers,

We’re a team of scientists developing a whole-ecosystem approach to reef restoration called Wholome Arks. Instead of transplanting individual corals onto degraded reefs, we cultivate entire reef communities on floating midwater “Ark” structures that increase biodiversity, water quality, and coral survival. During marine heatwaves, the Arks can also be lowered into cooler waters to help protect corals from bleaching.

With major heatwaves predicted throughout 2026–2027, we’re connecting with restoration groups and researchers who may benefit from integrating Ark systems into their projects. We’ve also created a grant writing kit to help researchers apply for funding.

Feel free to message me or check out our work at https://www.wholome.com/</title>

				<title>Respected  Sarvjeet Singh,

I have read your message, and I am very pleased to see your passion and dedication towards the environment, especially coral reefs.

I would like to suggest that the Zoological Society of India has a valuable handbook on coral identification. Studying this resource will help you gain deeper knowledge about Indian coral fauna.

In addition, significant research has been conducted on Nicobar Island, where around 245 species of hard corals have been documented. I am confident that reviewing this work will provide you with valuable insights into the coral ecosystems of your country.

I would also encourage you to prepare presentations on corals and coral reefs for school and college students, and take time to raise awareness among them, particularly regarding coral conservation.

I am also part of this group, and if you need any assistance in preparing presentations related to coral reefs in your country, I would be happy to support you.

Lastly, if you are experienced in diving, that is excellent. If not, I would strongly encourage you to learn, as it can greatly enhance your understanding of coral reef ecosystems.

Thank you, and best wishes for your valuable efforts.

Best regards,
Dr, Abid Raza
